Holy Family Math League is a competitive academic league that competes in the Minnesota State High School Mathematics League. Students compete in a variety of high school level math topics.
Holy Family Math League competes in the Canterbury Division consisting of Chaska/Chanhassen, ISM/Eagle Ridge Academy, Northfield, Lakeville, and Farmington. Mr. Gary Kannel coaches math league and practices occur after school. The division holds five meets per year from November through February, as well as a state tournament. Each year, between 20-25% of the Holy Family student body compete with our math league teams.
Questions
The math problems divide into five events – Individuals A, B, C, and D, and the team event. Events A, B, C, and D usually consist of Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2/PreCalculus, and others topics. The team event in Math League is a mix of all four.
Scoring
Each team member chooses to compete in two individual events, and all team members compete in the team event. Each high school selects its eight top members, including at least two freshmen or sophomores, as its “varsity” team. This team racks up points in the name of the school; the other students simply compete for themselves. Each event contains one single point question and three two-point questions, so the maximum a person may score per meet is fourteen points. The team events include six questions worth four points each. A team’s score is a tally of the individual scores of the varsity members and the varsity team score. Varsity members of the scoring team can change meet to meet. The end of the season culminates with a state tournament.
