Trap Team

The Fire Trap Team participates in the fall league of the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League and the spring league which culminates in the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League State Trap Shooting Championships.

Trap Shooting athletes get to enjoy two seasons; spring and fall. The fall season lasts for six weeks on from mid-September through mid-October. This is a more laid back season, compared to the spring season which has the Alexandria State Tournament in mid-June. During the fall, the team gets to enjoy the great outdoors and brush up their skills for hunting season. The fall team practices on Tuesday afternoons at Watertown Rod and Gun Club, the same location as the spring season.

All participants must have completed MN DNR Firearm Safety before they can participate and our coach to participant ratio is 1:4.

In 2015 Fire Trap Team took sixth place in the state tournament. In 2015 alone, there were 425 schools competing in Minnesota.

Pat Maus

Patrick Maus is a 2003 alumnus from Holy Family. In 2008, after graduating from St. Norbert College with a B.A. in Social Studies and secondary education certification, Mr. Maus returned to Holy Family. A few years later a group of students came to Mr. Maus eager to start a trap shooting team. Being an outdoorsman himself, Mr. Maus wanted to pass on his enjoyment for the students at Holy Family. In 2014, MSHSL sponsored a State Tournament for Trap Shooting HFCHS qualified team. Holy Family finished in 4th in state that year. Since then, each year HFCHS Trap Team has qualified at least one individual to MSHSL State Tournament. This means the individual(s) from Holy Family was ranked within the top 100 in the state based on their season average score. Mr. Maus is excited to see where the sport will continue to grow, considering in 2019 there were over 10,000 students that participated in the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League. Patrick Maus is the head coach of the HFCHS Trap Shooting Team. Josh Rutz and John Kunze are additional coaches to ensure a safe team for Holy Family.
